We are thrilled to have recently received a grant from the Santa Cruz County Cultural Council to create a mural downtown.
The mural has the theme of “The Nature of Santa Cruz” and it will be put on the Firefly Café wall on the Pacific Avenue side.
We will spend the year exploring natural spaces in Santa Cruz and creating art around them. We will take field trips to local nature areas including Neary Lagoon, Henry Cowell State Park, and Wilder Ranch to get inspiration and do research. We will also create some of the mural art in the classroom and parts will be painted in the spring after the rains have stopped. We plan to finish by June of 2010.

Students work
with many creative mediums including printmaking, painting,
ceramics, and photography. They also benefit from the expertise
of guest artists, learn about master artists, take field
trips to view local art, and participate in art shows. |

Support Young Artists
Studio and treat yourself to some beautiful blank cards
featuring one-of-a-kind paintings by students in the program.

Young Artists
Studio is a free, inclusive open studio-type art classroom
setting. The artists are a diverse group including
honor students, developmentally disabled students, public,
private, and homeschooled students, autistic students,
and both physically able-bodied and disabled students.
They work in all 2 and 3-dimensional arts as well as
exploring crafts. |
| Through instruction,
studio time, guest artists, field trips, and opportunities
to exhibit art, the young artists explore their talents
and potential as artists. Young Artists Studio meets
twice weekly during the school year. Call to confirm
locations and times. |

It is difficult for any young person
to grow up. But for the disabled, the challenges can seem
insurmountable.Often shunned
for their differences, disabled young people tend to interact
only with other disabled youth, thus leading them to be
virtually invisible to the rest of society.
Our goal is to provide a comfortable
environment in which these two segregated communities, the
disabled and able-bodied youth, may work side by side in
their shared artistic interest and learn from one another's
diverse self expression.
